The Divine
Noble be the man
Noble be the human being,
Helpful and good!
For that alone
distinguishes him
From all beings,
That we know.
Hail to the unknown
Higher beings,
Which we foresee!
Man is like them!
His example teaches us
Believe them.
For impassive
Is nature:
The sun shines
Over evil and good,
And the criminal
Shine like the best
The moon and the stars.
Wind and streams,
Thunder and hail
Rush their way
And seize
Hurrying by
One by one.
Also so the luck
Gropes among the crowd,
Soon seizes the boy's
Curly innocence,
Soon also the bald
Guilty crown.
According to eternal, honorable,
Great laws
We all must
Our existence
Complete circles.
Only man
Is able to do the impossible:
He distinguishes,
Chooses and judges;
He can give the moment
duration to the moment.
He alone may
Reward the good,
Punish the wicked,
Heal and save,
All erring, wandering
Usefully connect.
And we worship
The immortals,
As if they were men,
Doing in the great,
What the best in the small
Does or would.
The noble man
Be helpful and good!
Tirelessly he creates
That which is useful and right,
Be an example to us of those
of those foreseen beings!
